| Mark Stafford | Sadly, I only found this page recently, several weeks after Rob's death. I'd just like to say that in the radio world there are people who do radio because they want to "do radio" and people who do radio because they have a burning passion to pass on to the world music that means so much to them. Rob was one of these people. For him, the music was everything and his passion for it was obvious. Rob was truly a gentle man who believed in the spirit of LA. In fact I have to say in all the long years I've worked for Radio Caroline, no one has encompassed the true spirit of LA as much as Rob did. He never had a bad word for anyone and believed in trying to see the good side of everyone. No matter what they did to him. He will be sadly missed. |

We are all profoundly saddened and shocked to learn of Rob's untimely death. And honoured to have been associated with him. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to Sharon and his family and friends, and to all Rob's colleagues at Radio Caroline. We share your loss. |
| Richard Lamont | As another Staffordshire anorak, I was saddened by Rob's passing. I knew him through various local RSLs we both took part in. Last year I was lucky enough to spent a couple of afternoons with him putting the world to rights over a quiet drink. Crohn's disease had been a terrible ordeal for him for years, but mercifully he could still enjoy the occasional beer. He told me an incredible story. Earlier in his life he worked as an RF design engineer for a large British company. He was once given a gadget to design without being told what it was for. It was all very secret. He did the job, and thought nothing more of it until very recently when, quite by chance, he visited a museum. There, on display, was the secret gadget he had designed: it formed part of an obsolete nuclear weapon system. As many have noted, Rob was a gentle and sensitive soul. The thought that he had worked on "some pretty nasty stuff" appalled him. At least the nasty stuff in question had become a museum piece without ever being used in anger. It was the mark of the man that, despite his own permanent and painful illness, he was more concerned about the effect his actions could have had on others. Rob had an encyclopaedic knowledge of rock. He chose the running order for his shows on the fly, knowing instinctively what would segue smoothly from the track already on air. This is of course the antithesis of formatted radio. This freeform, unpredictable and spontaneous approach was at the heart of his show. It feels as if another dial lamp has gone out on the old valve radio. The aether has lost a noble spirit, but one we can still hear in our Imagination. Goodbye Rob, and my condolences to Sharon. |
| Sabine Amsterdam |
I am so sorry to hear of Rob's death. Imagination was my favourite radio programme ever since finding Radio Caroline again. I had not been able to listen lately, wanted to tune in again tonight, saw no Rob Leighton listed in the schedule, and then discovered the sad reason why. Thank you Rob for the music. You will be greatly missed.
My condolences to his wife and family. |

I never met rob, but I still felt I knew him and knew him well, I guess it's the magic of Radio Caroline ! A very big thank you for all the music and hours of pleasure that you bought me and all the Caroline family keep on rocking - We will miss you! L.A. |
| Guy Manning | Rob was a true believer in and an active avid supporter of that most reviled of musical genres, ‘progressive rock’ and thank goodness for him and all those like him! Many of the smaller artists in the field, like myself, built a lot of our support and breaks from a treasured slot on the ‘Imagination’ show I met Rob a few times (the last time was at Summers End festival 2006). We talked for quite a while about all sorts, finally agreeing that I would definitely arrange to do a session for his show, at the cottage, soon. Sadly, time and circumstances never allowed this plan to fruition, but, he continued to plug my music in any case, bless him There is a special concert being organised by the Classic Rock Society (in Rotherham, UK) later this year, set up to pay tribute to all things “Rob”. I am honoured that they want me to perform that night. Please join us My thoughts are with Sharon & family |

I'm not often stuck for words. But struggling a bit now. Quite a bit actually. In my line of work as a Festival organiser and music journo I meet multitudes of music makers, background bods, performers and industry dudes. Now I'm reminded of the line "you don't know what you've got till it's gone". It's only when you realise what a substantial hole is created when a significant contributer is taken away that the power of hindsight kicks in. I met Rob through mutual friend Rob Gould of Fula/ Ashtar at a low key gig I was promoting in Buxton. Rob's politeness and embarrasment at Mr Gould's arranging for him to be on the guest list was both endearing and obviously now, memorable. I've been organising gigs and events for 16 years with every show bulging with extensive freebie applications/ demands - this one act of ground level support alone rendered Rob as literally 1 in several thousand. I wish I embraced more what I realise now. Thanks for making me think. |
| Celine Carroll | I have just heard of Rob's passing and it saddens me greatly.... It was an honour to know that Rob loved my music and found the time to play it on air. Indeed I'm not the only 'new' songwriter who's music Rob played. So I'm sure I speak for a lot of original songwriters when I say 'thanks Rob for playing 'our' music'. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. |
| Ray Harrington Vail | I was saddened to hear of the death of Rob Leighton. I knew Rob many years ago when I was a member of the London Music Radio crew. I remember him as a cheerful and kind man who never said anything negative about anyone else. The world will be poorer without him. My condolences to his wife and family. |

As an independent musician, I was very fortunate that Rob Leighton aired my music on Imagination. People who support "music for music's sake" are a very rare breed and I found Rob to be the most extraordinary and selfless in this small group. A little over a year ago, I let Rob know I was traveling from the US to do my first ever show in the UK. It was very special to me because it was at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, the birthplace of the music that made me want to be a musician in the first place. Rob let me know that he'd give me a plug in his show, but to my great astonishment I found out that he and his wife Sharon had actually gone quite a bit out of their way to take the train in from their home to see the show. Afterwards we hung out and Rob and Sharon took my girlfriend and I out to chat over tea. We were so honored and thrilled to meet him and he was so humble. Rob managed to take a day that I thought couldn't be more magical and special and make it even more so and I will never forget him for it. |

We are so sorry to hear of Rob’s death. Rest well,Rob. L.A. |
| Mark Andrews | Sadly I'd never had the chance to meet Rob but I feel like I'd met him through his programming on Caroline. I share his love of music that is ignored by many stations, his love of an alternative music and his love of others shone brightly through the Ethernet and the ether. Shine on brightly Rob may you find peace with the rest of the legends who've joined the "Great Gig in the Sky". L.A |
| Nick Barnes | What really sad news. The loss of a great presenter and really nice man. |
| Michel Morisse Mont de Marsan (France) |
The death of Rob Leighton is a very sad news in the world of radio. I listened to Rob for the first time a few years ago, when he was broadcasting his own program on shortwave, Imagination. More recently, I heard his program on Radio Caroline. I will never forget his hearty voice and his very particular and excellent program. |

We had the pleasure of meeting Rob at his home after being invited along during a get-together with the band Magenta. We were made to feel at home just as if we were old friends and a great evening was had by all. Rob was a really nice guy and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts go out to Sharon and all those closest to him. God Bless. |

Unfortunately I hardly knew Rob, being a radio Caroline returnee from 2006. Nevertheless it was quite a shock to hear that he had passed away! Last year he and I had exchanged a couple of emails concerning a Genesis-tribute band. He was so kind as to mention their concert dates on his show. I'm sure that he must have been a very gentle man and that he not only whole heartedly supported the concept of LA, but also lived it! Two days prior to his passing on, I had found a Dutch video-website with music videos. After having sent a number of videos to others, I suddenly had a very strong urge to also send one to Rob. I simply had to do this! I then came across "Heart of the sunrise" by Yes and forwarded it to him. Now, to my idea, he will be "in the heart of the sunrise"... My condolences to Rob's family, friends and the Caroline family! |

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Rob Leighton. Rob was a thoroughly decent and kind person who would always help anyone even though he was not in the best of health. My thoughts and sympathy with Sharon and his family. |
| David Francis New York |
Some people you can tell are extraordinarily kind and brave from an email across a great physical distance. |
| Paddy | Well my friend you are finally pain free. l miss our conversations already, we never did put the world to rights despite trying our best. I suppose we always knew that this day would come but it will always seem too soon. It seems stupid to think that we used to worry about our low power tests on 9mhz when as I write this you are blasting into the UK on 9.29mhz in a way we could only dream of. This isn't goodbye, I'll just see you later. Your friend always... |
| Lynne & Phil, Higham, Kent | Goodnight to one of us: Loved your programmes - fast but informative! God Bless. |
| Jim Shackleton Australia |
RIP my friend we will always remember you |
| Richard Riley | Rob, I had the pleasure of meeting you in Bath, you travelled a long way to see me perform and I was deeply humbled by your efforts. Rest in peace, see you on the other side. Nothing is changed and nothing is lost and all in the end is harvest. |
| HEDLEY WILKINSON, IN WAGGA WAGGA AUSTRALIA | IT WAS A VERY SAD LOSS TO US, AND RADIO CAROLINE LISTENERS, AT THE DEATH OF ROB LEIGHTON, HE WILL BE SADLY MISSED BY US ALL, ALL THE BEST TO IS WIFE AND FAMILY. |
| Martin Denman Erskine, Renfrewshire |
Peter Moore’s tribute to Rob Leighton is spot on. Rob was special you could sense his warmth through his voice. His Imagination programmes were a radio treat that were perfect for Radio Caroline and the spirit of LA. He will be much missed. |
| Helen | Seems to me that lots of people will miss you, this is a measure of your wonderful personality, Sharon is going to miss you too and that must be so hard for her. I never really got to know you except from second hand news that’s a shame. God bless |
| Bob Squirrell Crewe |
I first heard Rob on Imagination Radio on Merlin Network One. I thought it went well with Radio Caroline and I was very pleased when Rob joined Caroline. I met him a few times and found him to have a very warm personality. Of course I shall remember him for introducing us to some fine new music in his evening shows, but I will also remember his breakfast shows where he would sometimes just do fun things like rummage through an old box of singles. On one show he provided me with my first and probably last opportunity to hear We’re Going On A Tuppeny Bus Ride on Caroline. I will miss him and send my condolences to Sharon |
| Derek and Rosemary Stott | I first met Rob some three and a half years ago when I moved in as a neighbour. Only two days in our new home I foolishly managed to lock myself out. I decided to seek the help of a neighbour and called at Rob and Sharon's cottage next door. I arrived at Rob's front gate just as he was about to leave in a taxi. I hastily explained my predicament and asked Rob if I could borrow his Yellow Pages. Without the slightest hesitation, Rob tossed me his house keys and said "It's in the front room by the phone - help youself" and got into his taxi and left. We had not met previously and he did not know me from Adam. He was not even put off by my Liverpool accent! As I got to know him better I realised that this was so typical of him. Helping others was simply second nature to him as is borne out by the many tributes from his friends and contacts in Caroline. We have lost the best neighbour we have ever had. Our deepest condolences to Sharon in her tragic loss. |
| Barbara Kirk Wakefield, West Yorkshire |
Dave and Steph Kennedy introduced me to the delights of Imagination Radio, and I'm sorry to hear of Rob Leighton's passing. A genuine music enthusiast in a field where there's so many who see it as a stepping stone to game shows. Rest in peace, Rob. |

Peace Brother, my heartfelt condolences to a great person and broadcaster. |

It was a pleasure to have had the opportunity to do his interview for Horizon magazine last year but unfortunately I never met him. He will be sadly missed. |

Rob was one of the bravest and gentlest men I have ever known. He will be sorely missed by all those who's lives he touched. |
| Barry and Bud James Radio Caroline |
It is with great sadness that I am writing this tribute, Rob was one of a very rare breed of people, lovely man , great presenter, and owner of an old car, and of course a Caroline man. |
| Stewart and Rita Barker | We would just like to say how we will and do miss Rob's day time program. Our thoughts are with his family and close friends. He was and always will be the Gentle-Man of Rock. God bless you Rob |
| Stuart Loughton | I was very saddened to hear of the untimely death of Rob Leighton. I used to listen to his shows and he brought me many hours of pleasure listening to the music. My condolences go out to his wife Sharon and family. |
| Elija | My deepest condoleances, I did not know Rob personally but always enjoyed listening to his programmes. My support and strength to Sharon |
| Rosemary and Mike Weston | We are very sad to hear of Rob's death. A huge loss to the Caroline Family. Although we have listened and enjoyed his programmes for many years, we only met him briefly during the 2004 RSL from the Revenge. He really was the same caring, unassuming, gentle, helpful and friendly man who we listened to on Caroline. His vast knowledge and enthusiasm for progressive music did much to widen the horizons of his audience and help new artists on their way to fame. Most of all, he promoted Loving Awareness and was not afraid to put it into practice. We will miss him greatly and our thoughts are with Sharon and his famliy and friends. |
| Dave Mawson Pure 107.8 fm Stockport Cheshire |
God bless you Rob, condolences to the Leighton family. Keep Heavens Radio Station rocking with loving awareness. |
| Peter Punchard | Rob introduced me to bands such as Karnataka and Mostly Autumn. His show was a shining light amongst the darkness of programmes that are broadcast by others. He will be greatly missed by me as one of many who consider themselves to be just an ordinary listener. I send my sympathies to all his family and hope that they can take comfort in the fact that he was greatly loved by all Caroline listeners. |
| Trevor in Birmingham | Rob's knowledge of music coupled with his gentle style of presentation made him one of the Caroline greats of recent years. Hard to believe we won't be hearing his distinctive wonderful programmes again. Thursday evenings and Friday mornings just won't be the same. I feel sure Rob's influence will stay with the station for a long time to come. |
| Peter and Jean Barnet | Rob Leighton's very fine programmes will be sadly missed by my family, and many others. Very sorry to hear of his death. Rest in Peace. |
| Stewart Edwards Coventry |
I was fortunate enough to meet Rob at a Caroline Christmas party in Southend. He was a quiet and unassuming man, but boy did he play some great music on his 'Imagination' show. He will be sorely missed by all the listeners and my thoughts are with his wife Sharon, family and friends. |
| Wallace Sephton | I first met up with Rob following email correspondence about his Imagination activities; I was at a Karnataka gig at the Limelight Club and was taken aback to see a Blue Horses video playing during the interval, who was the influence? Then prior to the main band appearing someone in a Radio Caroline tee shirt jumps on stage, announces himself as Rob Leighton and introduces the band, problem solved! At an opportune moment I grabbed him and introduced myself, and that was the beginning of one of those rich friendships with someone of whom I had a lot of common ground with; a passion for radio I was one of the many people to join the Caroline Club when Caroline North was established, and a passion for quality rock music ignored by network radio and consigned to the underground. The finest memory of Rob was when we arranged to meet up at a local hostelry in Rotherham before the 2003 Classic Rock Society Awards Night, and spent an hour discussing our philosophies and generally putting the world back in order! It was a privilege to know Rob Leighton. My deepest condolences to Sharon and all his family and friends. |
| Tony Christian Radio Caroline. |
Am still totally shocked at the death of Rob,he certainly was one of the good guy's in radio,so gentle and caring. Rob was more concerned with the health and well being of everyone around him, and never complained about the constant battle with his own poor health. It has been a pleasure to have known and worked with Rob all these years as a friend, I am sure he will be sadly missed. |
| Chris Bent | Dedication, generosity, humility, integrity - something to aspire to, but not always easy to achieve. Rob made it seem so easy. I was privileged to stand in for Rob at Radio Caroline, honoured to be invited to Imagination Towers, and spent a very pleasant day recording a show with Rob at his studio: in answer to my physique resembling musical choice of ‘Fat Man’, Rob replied with Dylan’s ‘Ballad of a Thin Man’. Illness may have made Rob physically thin, but as a resident of Planet Earth he was a Giant of a man. He faced adversity with incredible bravery. His technical knowledge was immense and I marvelled at the revolutionary Crossed Field Antenna in Rob and Sharon’s garden. In the studio he used an unusual flat plate Pressure Zone Microphone which probably gave Rob's voice the subtle intimacy that characterised his presentation. Music radio has lost an irreplaceable gem. Let us never forget Rob Leighton’s Imagination ...we are the music makers and we are the dreamer of dreams... |
| Mark Dezzani, Seborga | There are moments of bliss that remain with you throughout your life. They are often the simplest moments......... A new home with a plush bathroom. I love wallowing in the bath! A candle; a glass of good red wine; A book and a radio. Unable to find any good music on the local FM dial, I make a rare swing through the short wave band on the well worn radio cassette machine. The usual jumbling cacophony of noises & propaganda, monotone voices, wobbly signals then KAPOW! A mega-strong highly compressed signal somewhere around 9 Megs playing cosmic rock. A friendly English voice, 'Imagination Radio.' It is Rob Leighton, the music wizard of the Merlin Network. My bath water got tepid, then topped up with more hot. The candle burnt low. My glass was refilled. The music kept flowing. No fade outs, just occasional surges of distortion. The book went unread as the sounds fed my imagination. I reluctantly climbed out of the bath, very wrinkly but cleansed not just of body, but also of spirit. Thank you Rob for that memorable blissful moment. It was great to become a colleague of yours a few years later and to meet you at a Caroline Party. Imagine how many other moments of bliss you provided. |
| Caron and Alun Thomas | The news of Rob's death was a shock to us all, even those who knew of his illness. A great spotter of talent and a person who demonstrated his technical skill with great modesty. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Sharon, his family and his work colleagues. |
| Lots of love, Kathie Touin |
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Rob's death. Rob was one of the first people to play my music on the radio, and was unfailing in his support and encouragement. Though he never let on about his own health, in his emails to me he was kind and encouraging while I was recovering from a couple of recent surgeries, and always positive about my music. I know he will be sorely missed by many listeners and artists alike. My thoughts are with his wife at what must be such a difficult time. |
| Gill & David | So sorry to hear the news about Rob from Sharon this morning. We had the pleasure of knowing Rob for nearly 25 years, from his days at Marconi and his mobile amateur radio from the back of his Morris Traveller. Then through various job moves until he was able to spend his time doing what he enjoyed most, playing music. As others have said, he was a true gentleman. Caring, honest & reliable. We never saw him happier than when he met Sharon. Our thoughts are with you. LA. |
| Steve Comer, Bristol | I've just heard the sad news about Rob on Clive's Sunday programme, and read it on the website. I always enjoyed his programmes, he was one of that rare breed of radio DJ's that really thought about the music he played, and put that first. In that regard he is Truly on a par with the likes of Johnny Walker, Bob Harris, and the late Roger Scott. I had no idea he was suffering from this terrible illness. Condolences to all his family and friends at all at Radio Caroline. |
| Paul Meier, German Caroline |
This morning, when I switched on my computer, it was a shock to read this bad news. My deepest also from me to Rob and all good friend. |
| Kathy and Tom Barham | Tragic news. So sorry to hear of Rob's death. My thoughts are with his family and all his Radio Caroline friends, both colleagues and listeners. |
| Ibrahim Tajikistan |
My dear friend and English Dad! For the past of 10 years you taught me how this is a fascinating world to believe. I grew up taking your all valuable emails, I never thought that you can pass away. I pray for you and my condolences to his wife Sharon and friends in Radio Caroline, as well as all over the world. I will miss you, miss your emails of encouragement and imagination... Mourning friend and Tajik son from Tajikistan |
| Richard Picking | I never had the good fortune to meet or even to speak with Rob. I did however send him the odd email, and his reply was always written as if from an old friend - light hearted and personal. His radio presentation was always about the music and not about him. God bless you Rob and have a good rest mate. |
| EDDY BUTCHER | MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH THE FAMILY AND RADIO CAROLINE WHAT A DJ AND A FRIEND TO SO MANY PEOPLE. |
| Steve Price and the ARfm Team | Rob will be a sad loss to the world of radio. A true presenter who was dedicated to the cause of great music being heard over the airwaves. Our condolences to his wife and family |
| Trevor | I never met Rob but as a fellow sufferer of the wretched Crohn's disease, for which I had surgery in the early 80s, I can appreciate to some extent the pain that Rob must have been suffering. Fortunately that surgery was successfull and I have had no re-currence of it but I know of others who, like Rob, have not been so lucky and the illness and it's side effects can be very dibillitating. To be able to carry on with life in as normal a way as possible, and produce an entertaining weekly radio programme, says much about Rob's stoicism and character. He will be sadly missed. |
| Steve, Cornwall England |
A great "Caroline" man, A great broadcaster, sadly missed. |
| Martin Fisher Radio Caroline |
Shocked, stunned and saddened when I heard of Rob's passing on Thursday. I have only met Rob on a handful of occasions, but I will always remember one of the Caroline Riga Bar gatherings when a small group of us including Rob and Sharon went out for a meal. This was when I realised how much Rob and I had in common, with his technical background and great love of music. Rob was genuine, a real gentleman and will be greatly missed by all that knew him and the many listeners to his 'Imagination' programme. Heart-felt sympathy to Rob's family. Rest in peace - Rob. |
| Dave, Birmingham | Rob will live on in our hearts. |
| Peter Woods | I'm very sad and shocked to read about this loss. I was unaware of Rob's poor health or his brave battle with the pain he endured. I met Rob for the first time a couple of years ago when travelling with Ross crew colleagues to Roger Day's 40th tribute in Lichfield. On the return journey in the back of the car I remember having a really enjoyable conversation with Rob about Caroline and the 70s landbased pirates in London, the state of radio today and politics too. We were well engrossed in passionate discussion and I won't forget how talking with Rob was so easy and such a pleasant experience too; it felt as if I had known him for years, yet it had only been minutes. Yes a true example of Loving Awareness - he was simply such a genuine and decent guy. Doug Wood is right, Rob was the John Peel of Caroline. This radio station we adore has has lost a very dedicated presenter, the Caroline family has lost a true gentleman and loyal member. My sincere condolences to Rob's wife and family at this sad time. |

I tuned in to Caroline on Thursday evening preparing to record Rob’s Imagination program and was shocked and greatly saddened to hear of his death. I’ve long been an admirer of his and of the music he played and for me he was what Caroline has always been about. It was only between Christmas and the New Year that I started to exchange E-Mails with Rob following a question I asked about some music he’d played. I rarely listened to his Thursday show as it’s about the only night I regularly go out these days. Rob replied at length the following day, he attached the track I’d asked about as an MP3, gave me some tips and suggestions for recording software and offered to upload his entire program for me. We swapped several E-Mails in the following week and were planning for him to visit me in Leeds to raid my MP3 library (as he put it). I can see from the many messages here that Rob was as kind and generous to everyone. I can’t explain why I should feel so upset about someone I’ve never met or even spoken to but from those few E-Mails I felt I’d found a new friend and was greatly looking forward to meeting him. To his wife, family, colleagues and those who were lucky enough to call him a friend, my condolences. |

Shocked and saddened by this news. I'd met and chatted with Rob on numerous musical occasions, and half expected to see him again at The Limelight for the gig last Thursday. I now know why I didn't, and am devastated to find the reason. Crohn's disease is something I've learned a lot about in recent years, and it's not a condition I'd wish upon anyone. Rest well, Rob. |

It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of our friend and colleague, Rob Leighton. Rob was a very gentle person who only saw good in people. He also took an interest in what you yourself were doing,he was a genuinely nice guy. My first meeting with him was at the xmas party in Southend, he introduced himself and told me how much he enjoyed the 60's and 70's request programme. He also talked about my home town of Hastings, that he had lived there from the mid 70's and had also been at Hospital Radio Hastings like myself. When I told him that I had missed a live concert of Ray Davies on his programme, he then sent me a copy without me asking for it. Rob will be sorely missed as the many comments already show, and my thoughts are with Sharon and his family at this sad time. |

What can I say that has not already been said! Lovely man, good sense of humour, great taste in music! He will be sadly missed ! Rest in peace Rob. LA. |
| Barry Marsh | I never had the privilege of meeting or even speaking with Rob. As both a fellow Radio Caroline Presenter and also a fan of Rob’s show I shall miss Rob’s passion for both Prog Rock and also his sense of fairness to all which came across in both his shows and the various emails amongst the Caroline staff. I am sure his loved ones most be devastated, but I hope they can take some comfort from the many comments about Rob’s contribution to music, Radio Caroline and respect and fairness to others reflected in these messages. Rob I hope the music is good wherever you are resting. |

Something strange happened a short while ago. I'm currently staying in a hotel in Monterey California, with a nice room overlooking the sea. I'm supposed to be preparing a presentation for tomorrow, but I thought I'd just check the Caroline mailing list before getting down to work. Actually the thing that spurred me to do that was a flock of very noisy seagulls landing outside and making the most unusual sound; almost like they were wailing about something. Then I read the messages about Rob, and I'm not ashamed to say that my reaction to the terrible news was quite emotional. It's taken me a while to compose myself so I can type something here. Like many people who have posted messages, I never met Rob, but I still consider him a great friend. As we all know, Caroline is not like your typical radio station with a 'fan club' mentality, and I really appreciate all the effort that everyone puts in to keep it going from strength to strength. But at this point I would like to state that Rob was my favourite Caroline presenter. As others have mentioned, his presentation style was very special; he was one of those people who made you feel that he was just chatting with you personally. He also introduced me to some fantastic music that I would never have heard anywhere else. His programmes always reminded me of the Caroline of the 1970's, the era that (aside from the current one) was my personal favourite. Reading the other comments here, it's clear that many, many others felt a great affection for Rob too. One thing that's amazing is how much he did to help other people, despite his personal difficulties. Rob and I conversed via email from time to time and, true to character the only thing he ever mentioned about his health was that he had some issues which were a bit of a nuisance. I don't think I would be capable of a small fraction of his fortitude. When a while back Cliff Osborne played my top 15, I was on a business trip so I put a message on the mailing list to ask if someone could record it for me. Someone very kindly did that, but Rob also went to the trouble of downloading a copy of the studio master and placing it on a server for me to download. There are many examples of Rob helping people in the messages here; something that must have been increasingly difficult for him as the time went by. But it's clearly typical of this 'Gentle Man' (as someone aptly put it) - many acts of kindness, doing things for other people just because it's a nice thing to do. Never making a fuss, and always just being a totally decent person and looking at things in a positive way. In my humble opinion, we could all learn a lot from his example. It's very hard to accept that there won't be any more Imagination or Friday breakfast programmes from Rob. My thoughts are with his wife Sharon and the rest of his family. Hopefully at the appropriate time they will be able to read all the comments here, to see how widely loved and admired he was. I just hope that in some small way the fact that many others are sharing their sorrow will lighten their load a little. Looking out over the 'Hotel California' sunset I can hear Rob's voice. If there's another Radio Caroline 'up there' then they've just added another top performer to the line-up. LA |

I've known Rob for many years, as a friend and fellow broadcaster. We shared the same passion for radio, music and our native Staffordshire. His style and choice of music brought something very special to the late night airwaves. I recall listening to Rob's late night show about 7 years ago on a trial local station in Stafford broadcasting on a low powered FM transmitter. While driving home I remember having to pull over and park up because I didn't want to miss any of his show and I was loosing reception as I traveled further away. He was playing 'Sebastian' by Cockney Rebel and then some Be Bop Deluxe. His show gripped me; his style of presentation coupled with the music he played has never left me. I only chatted with Rob a few days ago on the phone and he asked if I could put him on the guest list for 'The Reasoning' gig on Thursday 17th Jan at The Limelight Club in Crewe, where I am now General Manager. Of course I was more than happy to do this and was looking forward to seeing him and catching up. But I couldn't understand why he didn't turn up on the night, not like Rob at all. But now I know why he didn't make it. Rob lost his battle against "that bit of a nuisance" that night. Rob I will miss you, it was a real pleasure working with you and a pleasure listening to you. You were a "thoroughly good chap and we didn't want to lose you". |
| Mamadou Diouldé BARRY | I feel so sorry to hear of Rob's death, he complies to the natural law. So all my condolenses to his family, friends, listeneres and colleagues at caroline. I have not had the opportunity to hear him because i am a new listener of this radio since this week via my new worldspace radio. |
| Dave Fox | A great radio man that will be sadly missed but not forgotten. |
| Bob Glen Caroline's No 1 Fan |
Rob my boy I am so sad tonight, you were a big part of the Caroline family and will be sadly missed. Say Hello to Tony Allen for us. We love you both. Always Remembered |
| Tom Lodge Jr. | My deepest. To Rob and The Caroline family, No matter how prepared we are it is always a shock, life is so precious. It sounds like he was dearly loved, and wise, as I could learn from his live and let live attitude. Love to all |
| Jim and Maria Ross | We were so saddened to hear about Rob today. He was an excellent DJ without ego whom greatly enriched our lives with the likes of Guy Manning, Mostly Autumn, Blue Horses and Karnataka. A champion of free speech and freedom who we greatly respected and wish their were more like Rob. He was also a living embodiment of Loving Awareness and despite his own health problems frequently reached out to others in need within the Caroline family. We remember with gratitude the helping hand Rob and Sharon offered me when I had some health problems a few years ago. We will meet again one day Rob for another naughty cream cake party on the LA deck. You were the "music maker" Rob and the "dreamer of dreams", far more than "Starfish on the ocean floor" you helped the tide in the right direction and we will always remember you. |
| Ian Fountain Grappenhall Warrington Cheshire |
It is with a great sadness that I read of the death of Rob Leighton. I am particularly fond of progressive music, both original and current. Each week, one could look forward to a very varied selection of tracks, such that I have a very long list of albums still to be bought. His programme was most eagerly anticipated and it was always most innovative and interesting. Rob will be so sorely missed. |
| Paul O'Neill (Strangefish) |
It was with deep sadness that I heard this news, so much so that I wanted to add my own thoughts. Rob was a gentleman and a passionate supporter of new live music. His cottage was also full of the same calm peacful spirit that he exuded. I think the (growing) number of tributes here are true testiment to a quiet man who made a massive difference to so many people. Even though I only met Rob on about 3 or 4 occassions I felt that I knew him and he knew me, such was Rob's openness and honesty. A true role model for us all. |
| David, Stephanie and Glen Kennedy | I met Rob for the first time in the Summer of 2000, I asked him what gave him the most pleasure from his shows, he replied: “I enjoy trying to bring the same pleasure to others as I feel myself when I hear a song that makes my eyes water or gives me goose pimples”. “And”, he continued, “in a small way, we bring together the world community when, for an hour each week, it doesn't matter if you're a shepherd in Tajikistan, a lawyer in Germany or a deckhand on a ship in the South Atlantic”. And that was what it was like, great music crossing the language and cultural barriers, bringing together people who appreciated imaginative music, in a shared listening experience. From the days when he broadcast on short-wave 6101kHz in the 49 metre band to the better broadcasting quality via satellite and internet. Rob Leighton was a modest man; he said he used to let the music do the talking because: “Musicians can phrase things much more eloquently than I can and really, the only information that needs to be imparted is contained within the music”. He leaves us a legacy of informative interviews and enjoyable music sessions, from bands as diverse as The Blue Horses and Magenta to The John Hackett Band and Strangefish. Rob had a background in radio and electronics, he loved music and people and so broadcasting was a natural home for him. He was a gentleman with a heart of gold, a champion of imaginative quality rock music, who believed that: “Rock music is contemporary music for people who think.” I shall remember Rob for introducing new music to us that didn’t get airplay in the mainstream and for his enthusiasm for discovering new bands, for his resilience and bravery. Our thoughts are with his wife Sharon, who so lovingly supported him throughout, enabling him to achieve his dreams that brought him and his listeners’ such happiness. We’ll miss you Rob. |
| Hans from Antwerp | LA was allways a part of your way Rob, it was reflected in your programs and also in answering an email, We'll miss you , but never will forget you as some bands are forever linked to your "imagination"program, Walk on in the dreamworld my friend until we'll meet again |

Rob, you brought back music into my life like Radio Caroline did in 1973 when I found it. It was 2 years ago I re found Radio Caroline again and Imagination was the first show I heard. It blew me away. Rob's voice, so gentle, so enthusiastic, so sincere. The music mesmerised me. He brought to my attention, with the aim of his show to play music by artist not normally given airplay, artist to many to mention. But Rob, thank you for Joe Bonamassa, Ezra, Magenta, The Flower Kings, Little Atlas and Strangefish. The format of Imagination was so simple and is a show from my heart. If I could do a radio show, that is what the format of it would be. To me Rob was as important as John Peel was to me when I was between 18 and 15, Alan Freeman, when I was between 14 and 19. Every e-mail is sent to Rob would be answered with painstaking accurate information and always a little extra. I never meet you, but A true friend and music lover. I will miss you on Thursday night and Friday Mornings. But the memories will always be with me. May God Bless Your Soul and May we meet in Heaven so you can once again pass the time with music for the soul My deepest condolences to Sharon and all his family and friends. |
| Chris | So sorry to hear of Rob's death. My condolenses to his family, friends and colleagues at Caroline. |
| Basab Dey Delhi , India |
My deep condolence to radio caroline and the family of the presenter who died this morning. |
| Steve Pragnell | Just tuned into Caroline and heard the very sad news about Rob. Please send my condolencies to his wife and family. It was his shortwave programme that rekindled my interest in classic rock. After corresponding on and off for the past few years we finally met up last August at his cottage in Staffordshire. Thanks for your hospitality Rob and for your inspiration. |

It was with great shock when I heard about the death of Rob yesterday morning. I was in contact with Rob a couple of times. His passing is a great loss to Caroline and us listeners. Thursday evenings will never be the same without him. I am known to Caroline as Frans the Dutchman living in Limerick. And I have been following Rob’s Imagination since the start of Caroline on the Analog Satellite system in 1995, starting broadcasts first in the weekend only and later extending to week days with Rob’s Imaginations becoming a weekly feature. Rob’s way of presenting created a very atmospheric program where his superb musical expertise and taste were almost touchable through the speakers of your system. His program was unique and an oasis of tranquillity and musical excellence. We will greatly miss him. |

Greetings from Long Island, New York... ...where this long-distance Caroline listener has been saddened by the news of Rob Leighton's departure. To me, he was one of the many people who have made Caroline that rarity of rarities in broadcasting: a "taste-maker," a station that creates a positive impact not only on its listeners but also the musicians whose work is supported. I doubt very much that I would have heard of either Kathie Touin or the band Bluehorses had it not been for Caroline - or for presenters such as Rob, who saw to it they found a well-deserved audience. A DJ or presenter who can work that kind of alchemy is precisely the kind of talent any radio broadcaster - be it station or network - would truly need and want. We have no one of his caliber in commercial radio for the New York metropolitan area, but we can certainly learn from his legacy, which is worth passing on down. LA in perpetuity... |
| Steve Taylor | Sad news indeed. We have some great memories of our visits to the cottage, the cosiest venue we've ever played! Thanks for everything Rob, we have lost a true champion of the unsigned and unheard. Steve and all connected with Strangefish. |
| Bill Barnes for Horizon Magazine |
Rob will be much missed by us all but must be missed so much more by his loved ones. On behalf of John Knight and the staff of HORIZON MAGAZINE our condolences to Rob`s family. Rob kindly found time to indulge our readers last May with a Caroline interview which we have reproduced today on the Horizon web site (see link on this site). As always Rob`s love of music, radio and most of all family and home comes across to us all. |

Life is full of "I should have" and "I meant to" and I'm just as guilty of using these words. I should have listened to Imagination more than I did, and I always meant to record it for later listening, but rarely did because there will always be "next week". And now that chance has gone, and "next week" will never come again. I DID, however, record what turned out to be Rob's last show and listened to it as I drove south to visit a friend last Tuesday. It was a wonderful show and I shall keep it for future enjoyment. Through his shows I discovered the joys of Mostly Autumn, Pendragon, The Tangent and many other wonderful bands that keep the Prog Rock flame burning, also the Classic Rock Society which he championed. Rob's passing is a great loss to all and he will never be replaced, who could fill those shoes? A sad day indeed but at least he is no longer in pain. My sincere condolences to Sharon and all his family and close friends. I'll raise a glass of ale tonight and drink to the memory of a unique man. |
| Chris Faulkner Holyhead |
Yet another Caroline DJ to go up to the Great Free Radio Station in the sky. He will be missed by many, not least for the airplay he gave to so many musicians who otherwise would probably not have been heard. Rest in Peace, Rob. Condolences to your Family. |
| Christian | I had the privilege of knowing Rob for about 17 years. I agree with all the lovely things that Peter Moore said about him in his very moving tribute. Rob was a lovely, gentle, honourable, kind and moral person. We had many great debates about life, the universe and everything. I hope that I was right and he was wrong on the subject of the afterlife. He richly deserves a happy and pain-free time playing music to his heart’s content in heaven converting all the angels to the kind of music he loved. I’ll miss you very much Rob. Hope to see you in heaven some day. |
| Steve Canning Basingstoke |
After many years of listening to Rob’s magnificent programme, it was only a couple of weeks back that I got my finger out and pinged him an email. Shame on me for taking so long. He replied at the non-existent time of about 04.30 am and responded to every minute detail in my memo - surely marks of his dedication to, and empathy with, his audience. I’m struggling to come to terms with Rob’s passing. He was a wonderful friend even though I never met him. Imagination was my “must listen to” programme, and there was something very, very special about his delivery. Caroline has dealt with some serious losses over the last 4 decades, but now she has lost someone who simply cannot be replaced. My deepest condolences to everyone dear to Rob. That must be one hell of a lot of people. |
| Bob Lawrence Radio Caroline |
Many people ask about Loving Awareness. Rob Leighton WAS Loving Awareness in action. He cared for people, he cared about people. I'll never forget the calls he put through to me when my world turned upside down a few years ago. A true character, he knew how to laugh too. I have memories going back over 30 years, thanks for those Rob. |
| Bob Dean West Yorkshire |
Very Saddened to hear the news about Rob, it feels like I've lost a personal friend. He was such a sincere and enthusiastic presenter and introduced Caroline listeners to such wonderful music. My condolences go out to his family. Rest in peace Rob. |
| Birmingham Photobooth | Devastating news. I didn't know Rob that well on a personal level, but listening to his programmes made you feel you did. The mark of a presenter of the highest order. Radio will be the poorer without you, Rob. We will all miss you. |
| Hendrik Vanderwee Sydney Australia |
Rob was the ultimate Caroline guy. 24 years ago, at a time when Radio Caroline was not freely available in Belgium I proposed by snail mail to Spain to my love hoping it would be broadcasted on the Ross. There was absolutely no chance it would be boradcoasted before 7 pm Belgium time. 319 was not available when it came it came at that very rare extraordinary time when I proposed to my girlfriend. Of 2.5 years, in fact to be honest she proposed to me. That is when Rob came in, his timing right with my letter all the way from Spain. He basically did the proposing on my behalf. My girlfriend was impressed. I was speechless. Happy together for over 27 years and living in Sydney we still call Radio Caroline home. Rob, back in the UK they should raise a statue for you. Greetings and love to your family from Sydney Australia. |
| Nic, Lizzie and all at Bluehorses | Such sad news. Rob was truly one of the nicest guys I know. Our visit to his and Sharon's home to record our live session was a hugely enjoyable experience, and we couldn't have been made to feel more welcome. We've often chatted about the day with fond memories. (and not a little envy for their wonderful cottage :o) I'm so pleased Rob got to read the dedication on our new album, and hope that in a small way it helped to show him how liked and appreciated he was. Thanks Rob, for your support and encouragement over the years. Our hearts go out to Sharon. |
| Rod Davis Faringdon, Oxfordshire |
So sad to hear the news yesterday. I had the privilege of meeting Rob, albeit briefly, at Roger Day's evening at Lichfield in 2006. A lovely man! Along with people like John Peel, he was one of the greats who had the enthusiasm and the courage to bring us music from lesser known but excellent bands who deserve but get little if any air play elsewhere. His 'Imagination' show on Caroline was always unmissable, and I've missed few over the last four years since I rediscovered Caroline. One didn't necessarily like everything he played, but then that is the hallmark of a truly great presenter - who is not afraid to introduce his listeners to music that they might not take to, especially at first. Thus I've heard many gems via Rob's programmes that I would not otherwise have heard. Truly in the spirit of Caroline! Thank you, Rob - you are much missed, and we will be the poorer for your leaving us. Our loss is heaven's gain! My deepest condolences to Sharon and all his family and friends. |
| Guy Roberts London SE9 |
Rob had one of those easy to listen to styles that made his show a pleasure regardless of the actual tracks being played. A true professional with the courage to play what he thought needed to reach an audience and wouldn't otherwise, rather than what would be instantly recognised. Not just a loss to his family and to Caroline but to the idea that radio should be free and diverse. RIP |
| Clive Thomas Radio Caroline |
Such an important element of the extraordinary Caroline mix sadly lost and sadly missed. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace. |
| Dave Awcock | Rob - Thank you for the music. God rest your soul. Love and peace |
| Doug Wood Radio Caroline |
I always thought of Rob as Caroline's John Peel, he gave so many unheard artists airtime. He lived just down the road from me and so met up from time to time and even worked on setting up an AM project together nearly three years ago before we got found out. Rob was a gentle very thoughtful man who loved Caroline and anything to do with it. He loved the music and was a wiz kid when it came down to the electronic side. Many times he helped me out with computer problems. Although plagued with health problems for many years he wouldn't let it get him down and never really talked about it. Thursday nights will never be the same again without Rob's gentle voice telling us about a new band he has discovered and the sharing it with his audience . Our thoughts go out to his family and many friends at this time. God bless you Rob, We salute you. Until we all meet again. |
| Di & Nick Pudlo Holland Cottage, Fairoak |
How totally devastated we are to lose such a great friend and close neighbour we have shared many, many great times with Rob & Sharon, and we hold plenty of fond memories. Robbie was such an unassuming yet inspiring soul, with the biggest heart, which he shared with all nothing ever being too much trouble for him. We thank Rob for introducing us to his favourite bands, his personal dedication to us both on his beloved Radio Caroline, and for the great times all his friends and we have shared being personally invited to his live band recordings at their lovely cottage in Fairoak. Thank you Rob & Sharon for all your hard work enabling these events to take place, and for sharing such special times with so many people. Such a sad loss is so hard to come to terms with and our utmost condolences are extended to Sharon and immediate family. Sleep peacefully Robbie until we meet again. |
| Steve Wilson Cape Town |
Like most, I obviously never knew Rob, but he sounded like a nice, genuine sort of person and I really enjoyed his programmes and choice of music. Very sad news. |
| Graham Coull | We have lost one of the good guys. Rob was a genuine, caring & decent bloke; not the first three words that spring to mind when describing most better-known radio presenters, but then again, Rob was not an ordinary presenter. When he started recording his Caroline programmes, he used to painstakingly re-record his links to ensure he got them to his satisfaction, but he soon abandoned that idea to do the recordings "live", allowing his natural charm & obvious enthusiasm for the music he played to overcome any perceived shortcomings in his presentation style. As well as being a technical whizz, whose expertise will be sadly missed by Caroline, he was also an Anorak, as witnessed by the fact that one of his mini-menagerie of rescued pets is called Ronan, the haunting photo he took of the Ross at Tilbury during the 2004 RSL which forms the basis for the Caroline Mouse Mat & his pleasure at being able to go to Roger Day's '40 Years in Radio' show at Lichfield the other year. Rob hosted several bands playing live in the front room of his cottage, chuckling when I described it as his "Staffordshire Studio Complex" and the memory of those special events will live long. To Sharon, our deepest sympathies for your untimely loss. |
| JOHN KEATES | So sorry to hear of Robs passing - a great broadcaster and peaceful man who kept the spirit of love and peace alive on Caroline- he will be much missed. deepest sympathy and much love to his wife and family. |
| John Read | I just don't know what to say...At a time like this words are so inadequate..Deep down inside I am so sad and feel the loss of Rob so acutely... I set my recorder to record his show as usual tonight and have just read the news... Rob was and will always be, for myself and I am sure for so many people, a great dj, a connoisseur of wonderfully eclectic music and the soul of the Radio Caroline of recent years..He was also a wonderful guy and his sweetness, kindness and the beauty of his spirit will remain an unforgettable reality for all his listeners and those that were lucky enough to have known him in person. I never met Rob personally though we were planning a meeting in Belgium where I live in the near future. I always felt his presence in many ways qnd times in my life as a dear and lovely friend and not just as a dj. Because Rob was and always will be special. Very, very special. You touched me, dear, dear friend... I loved the Imagination programme and only this afternoon was marvelling over some wonderful recordings that I was listening to: his great presentation style, his great choice of music and lovely voice and humour-filled intelligence. I really agree with Peter's tribute on the Caroline home page and all the other tibutes to our dear friend and favourite Caroline dj. Dearest Rob, you were so special for us all, an exquisite person. And you always will be. We'll miss you so very much. I want to send my love and affection and sympathy to Sharon and everyone else who was touched by the warm light you shared with us so naturally and so generously. Thankyou my very dear friend and lovely, lovely man. We'll never forget you. |
| Chris Martin Bournemouth |
I was, like so many, shocked to hear the news today. On meeting Rob for a few minutes in 2004 and he was exactly as he was whilst on air. Unassuming and pleasant as he always was as I listened to his shows. The first time I knew about Rob was when Radio Caroline started regularly on Satellite. He introduced me to many artists and acts I had never heard of. This was an education of the musical kind that all who listened were privy to the range of different types of music in his Imagination programme at night, also with the Breakfast show with its sometimes amusing content. On many occasions I would communicate with him and always had interesting replies. Along with this he had an outlook which plainly stood out in championing the true meaning of Loving Awareness. For myself, I was aware of his illness. When he was unable to do a show I spared a thought for him wishing a speedy recovery. Always breathing a sigh of relief hearing Rob on-air again. It is with deepest feelings I wish to give my Love to all his family and friends at this time of reflection. Many thanks to you Rob - LA. |
| Rob Olthof Amsterdam |
Very sorry to hear about his death. Rob was an excellent broadcaster. Rest in peace Rob |
| Philip Arrowsmith | As a newcomer to Radio Caroline and now a regular listener, I enjoyed his Friday morning show. I did not realise it was such a struggle for him. His emails have gone silent yet he obviously leaves a whole load of freinds behind to keep his memory intact. |
| Trot. (Steve Horton) Bury St. Edmunds. |
What a tragic loss. Rob had imagination. He knew exactly how to choose that right sound on a Thursday night. He'll be sadly missed by myself and my 14 yr old son Rowan. Our deepest condolences for all his family and friends. |
| Ralph and Carolyn @ Lycan Media Group | Much saddened to hear of Rob’s passing, we met on a few occasions at various prog events and I found him a genuine nice and very knowledgeable guy. Our condolences to his wife and family. |
| Steve Thorne | My thoughts are with Rob's family right now. He was a lovely person and was such an enthusiastic, positive character. I'll never forget the live radio gig that he sprung upon Martin Orford and I. I couldn't thank him enough for his help with my music. He made me feel like I had something special and boosted my confidence when it was low. |
| John Pascoe (AvatarMusicCanada) |
A devastating loss to both the world of progressive rock and radio in general... Rob was always the consummate professional and his impeckable taste and delivery will be dearly missed by his many loyal listeners. As this insidious disease claims yet another shining light much before time, we reflect on how many new bands were kindly given a much needed boost by Rob's show, his boundless enthusiasm and how much work was sadly, left undone. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Rob's family. Please find comfort in the fact that he has touched the lives of so many and will indeed be missed... Rob's 'Imagination' and vision lives on in the hearts of prog fans... near and far!! Rest well, |
| James Thomson | Im very sad to hear rob has passed away he was a great d.j. I always enjoyed his shows may I express my condolences to his family & friends, may god smile on him. |
| Peter Timmerman, Enkhuizen, The Netherlands | Imagination from Rob was an outstanding great program. A great mix of both prog and symfo rock. Rob was an authority on all prog music. We had email contact on occasion, sometimes exchanging musical experiences. Condolences’ to all around him, but also his colleagues at Caroline. He will be sadly missed. |
| MARTIN GROUT | I DO NOT KNOW IF ANYBODY IS IN THE STUDIO AT THIS SAD TIME, BUT I FEEL ROB WOULD BE VERY MOVED BY THE SHOW GOING OUT NOW, IN TRIBUTE TO HIM, I NEVER MET HIM, NOT SURE IF I EVER SPOKE TO HIM,BUT I KNOW THE SHOWS HE GAVE US, I REALLY ENJOYED,AND WILL MISS THEM.THANKYOU FOR THIS SPECIAL SHOW, I JUST WISH ROB WAS STILL HERE TO DO HIS SHOW,HIS OWN WAY,BUT WE CAN BE THANKFULL IN KNOWING HE IS AT REST NOW. |
| Barry Gilder Saffron Walden |
So sorry to hear the sad news of Robs passing.he introduced me to many bands that i would never have heard on any other radio station. He will be greatly missed. Please pass my condolences to his wife and family. Thank you Rob for the great music. You will be missed |
| Martin Turner | Rob Leighton, what a wonderful guy. Rob really “Inspired” my shows on Radio Caroline although I did have to make sure I didn’t replay tracks from his show on a Thursday on my show on the following Monday, having said that…. I frequently “plugged” his shows. Thanks Rob for your love of music, I’ll always think of you when I play the music of Threshold. Thursday nights / Friday mornings on Radio Caroline will never be the same. |
| Paul Douglas | I have known Rob for the last 10 years and everything that Peter says about him is more than true he was a gentle man in the deepest meaning of the words. He was more than willing to help were he could and to share his knowledge of electronics when required. His love of music is renowned and only exceeded by his need to expose his audience to new and upcoming artists. I must of course send my deep and sincere condolences to Rob's wife Sharon from myself and my family. I will phone you soon Sharon and share in your grief. |
| David Larner Caister On Sea Norfolk UK. |
I would like to express my deep sense of loss for a good friend I never met! Our common ground was a deep love of unusual and progressive music. We enriched each others lives exchanged emails, Cds, pictures, bad times, good times and had a kind of bond. He will be sorely missed and was unique and irreplaceable. He lives on in the gift of his music, memories and my thoughts Love to Sharon and his family at this difficult time. |
| Martin Orford (GEP Records / ex IQ) | Really sad and shocked to hear the news - Rob, you were a top man. |
| Lee Shuttlewood | I am deeply saddened to hear of Rob’s passing, and would like to offer my deepest condolences to all of his family and friends, on behalf of myself and the rest of the Ross Revenge crew. |
| Steph Kennedy | Our deepest sympathy to Sharon and family, best wishes,Rob was a lovely guy and it was an honour to have known him. Indeed a champion of progressive rock. |
| Hans Knot | Really again a sad moment that we lost a guy who had the same spirit as we have to fight for freedom and enjoyed so many people to play the music which wasn't heard on the main stream stations. I hope the family and nearest friends have the strength to carry this lost. Rob went far too early. May Peace be with him. |
| Julianne Wattles Lexington, Virginia, USA |
"Imagination" was my introduction to Radio Caroline. I think I missed only two of his shows after that first one in December 2005, and I caught most of his breakfast shows as well. To me, he was the embodiment of "loving awareness." Rob always went the extra mile with e-mail and other personal gestures, and I am one of the many whose life is so much richer for his kindness. I can think of few better role models than Rob Leighton. My condolences to his wife, family, friends, and everyone at Radio Caroline. |
| Benno Lucerne/Switzerland |
My best whishes to you - wherever you are now (I'm shure, it's a good place!). I will miss you. Thanks for your show and your music inspirations. |

I am so sorry to hear of Robs passing, his truly unique programmes were so reflective of the spirit of Caroline. My thoughts are with his family and friends. |
| PJ Deery | Another great Caroline friend lost. My sympathy to his family for their great loss. |
| Steve Mourton | Haunted voices stutter.................. Rest in peace Rob. |
| Shaun and Nina Geraghty Gnosall, Staffordshire |
I can't believe the terrible news about Rob this evening. Rob and Sharon were good friends to my wife Nina and myself and I shall never forget wonderful afternoons at their cottage watching recording sessions for Caroline by bands such as Bluehorses and Magenta. We of course knew that Rob wasnt a well man, but this comes as a great shock. Rob did more than anyone to ensure that modern progressive rock was given an airing and his loss will hit not only his many listeners on Caroline, but also many musicians and singers who's only radio airplay was on the Imagination programme. We live close to Rob and Sharon and I worked alongside him on Stafford FM where he did an Imagination programme on a daily basis to the lucky listeners of Staffordshire. < |
