I never met Howard Rose, AKA Crispian St. John, during his Voice of Peace days, but as a US teen-ager growing up in Israel, I spent countless hours listening to him and his staff on 1540 and 100 FM. I will miss him, and the spirit of what he represented. My best wishes go to Howard's wife and family.

CSJ has left us with a marvelous cannon of work. The tapes we are left with are historic proof of a fledgling industry struggling to find it's way...and whenever it needed a kick up the arse, Howard was there...from riding the storms on the North Sea to John Kenning's house in Twickenham from where Britain's first gold station was broadcast, Howard was THE radio maverick. In Sovereign's earliest days (when nobody knew if they would get away with 24 hour pirate broadcasting from a house in London!) I stood in a bedroom where a disco double decks set up was the main studio. 7'' singles scattered all over the floor..at the controls for breakfast..CSJ! And in his head was the sound coming out of the speaker in so many Acacia Avenues..and what a sound! Bloody fantastic. Driving up to Nottingham several weeks back I head Howard on breakfast at Carousel..still banging away! God bless Shag. Radio today might not be quite as exciting as the heady days of RNI/Atlantis or Sovereign but your unbridled enthusiasm for pop music radio has left its indelible mark on Britain's airwaves. We won't see his like again. SS

I first met Howard on the VOP in the mid 70's then at Radio Sovereign also during stints on Caroline in the late 80's. Thailand is my home for now and of course ‘The radio Magazine’ website kept me in touch with just about everything radio in recent years. During my visits back to UK Howard was always fun to talk with, his life long passion and devotion to radio has been a great inspiration to me. Thank you Howard. My mother taught Howard English at school and she still remembers his name today. I recall the time she told me how she had set an exercise for a class of thirteen year olds and that one of them had written his essay all about Radio Caroline. A few years later I met Howard, who lived in Great Bookham, and gradually realised this was one and the same person. In the early 1970s, he used to come round to my house and record programmes for the Pyrgos Broadcasting Station, a private medium wave station of the armed forces during the period of military government in Greece (4kW on 1349.5kHz). This station, and Howard's programmes on Saturday nights, were just audible in England. Howard was remarkable because his enthusiasm kept him busy exploring all kinds of new possibilities when there was no work for him offshore in the North Sea. In more recent years he would contact me for advice on frequencies and other technicalities. He always knew there was no truth in the government mantra "no frequencies are available". Such an unexpected and early death is shocking and a terrible loss. Who could match Howard's commentary on those he called "the accountants and suits" in charge of radio in this country? So, so sad. Thanks Howard.

I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to all friends and family of Howard Rose. He helped put together a great magazine which I have subscribed to for about 2 years now, having first heard of the magazine through a visit to Lantern FM in Barnstaple, since I subscribed to it I have always looked forward to Thursdays when it comes, and I keep nagging my Dad to renew the subscription every 3 months! I currently work at Ward Radio (Ealing Hospital), and I am sure the team there wouldn't mind me passing on their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Howard. RIP.

It's been a couple of weeks now since I heard the sad news of Howard's death. As I young anorak I first heard him on air on RNI in 1971 and then Caroline in late 1972.Even in those early days he was a real radio talent and a great inspiration to me as a budding young jock.In my mind he ranks as one of THE great offshore broadcasters. In later years, of course, he was one of the few champions of the need for variety and choice on our radio dial. Often he was a lone voice against the establishment and I always thought of him as a very brave man, for attacking the core of a broadcasting industry which provided his livelihood with their adverts in his magazine. We met and spoke at a few Anorak events over the years. But the most spooky thing is that on the day before I heard of his death, I was clearing out a pile of radio stuff and I came across a fax sent by Howard around three years ago. I was on air on Caroline's Satellite Service at the time and it said "Enjoying the show..Hoist up the anchor and head to sea"! He was one of my radio heroes and the old anorak in me had made me keep the fax.I'm off to search through some boxes hoping that I decided not to dispatch it to the bin ! Howard, Crispian, Jay ...they'll all be sadly missed.

I was a young, inexperienced kid working the breakfast show at my first station, Swansea Sound when Crispian (later to be known as Howard) entered my life. He was outspoken, brash, rebellious...a bit of a clown who loved to push the envelop. I loved this guy! He was a breath of fresh air in a stuffy, regulated industry. Over the years I've read with interest how he used those same traits to help change the radio scene in the UK. Howard had great vision and worked hard to see his dreams come true. It's unfortunate, but I've lost many radio friends and colleagues over the years: Pat Foley, John Warwick, Peter Craig, Brian Jackson, Ian Donnahey...and like them, Howard will be greatly missed.

Sometimes the news takes a while to get through here and I have just shed a tear for a true friend who always had a word and the time. Many a morning we would work together on the Ross Revenge at breakfast and one of us would make the coffee after Howard had been up checking every news service available including short wave. There was and always will be only one shag. goodbye friend Robin Ross.

What hallowed names I see on this tribute....but yes, I can only agree with the thoughts of others regarding Howard's dedication to the world of radio. I know did my bit running R.C.S.W. twixed 1980 & 83, but that was nothing compared to Howard's much longer dedication to the creation of good Radio. I remember meeting him on board the Ross Revenge, I think late August 1983, a real gentleman - with a wicked sense of humour! R.I.P old mate Freddie

Howard was very good to me - from the moment I met him on Caroline he became a friend in a very unfriendly invironment. He was always very generous and I remember him saying on the air on Radio Atlantis"Steve if you're listening come out to the ship". This was to lead to the best year of my life on the ship. We sent him up rotten on the air but he never took offence. Later in my life when things went haywire he was one of the first to call and offer help and support. A good guy and a friend I will really miss. Steve

Howard Rose did something no one thought could ever be done. He helped the rag tag handful of radio stations called ILR into a radio industry. He did it all with words and brought us together as a community of broadcasters and managers. He shone a bright light where it needed to be shone and turned over stones that many wished would not be turned. Thanks for the memories Howard and God Bless You and your family !

I was very shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Howard's death. The fact that this happened just after the successful sale of the magazine which provided financial security for is family makes his death even more tragic. As one of the regular contributors to the magazine over some seven years I have had many contacts with him- as well of course of reading the magazine, especially looking forward to 'Roses' Ramblings.' Howard was one of the true supporters and defenders of the radio industry; his enthusiasm and commitment to the medium and above all to the 'foot soldiers' who 'keep the meters wobbling' shone through all his work. He will be deeply missed by many-including thousands whom he never met.

Very sad to hear of Howard's passing. I listened to Howard as Crispian St.John on Caroline and RNI in the early 70's and also on The Voice of Peace when I was working in Israel and Egypt in the late 70's. In the 80's I really enjoyed his shows on Caroline as did my wife (he was her favourite DJ). He once played a record for us on his Coffee Break at 11am on Caroline and picked a very appropriate record as I was often away working on oil rigs. He will be sadly missed the radio world has lost a fantastic broadcaster.

I just received the latest issue of "The Radio magazine" just minutes ago and was shocked and saddened to read of the passing of Howard. I had several interesting conversations with Howard over the years regarding his passion for the Gold format. I was so looking forward to meeting him in the Summer of 2003 during our family trip to the UK (we've made 14 trips to the UK since 1988). I was very touched by the note he and the staff prepared and the hand written message on the magazine envelope in the wake of 9/11. I know the magazine is in very capable hands but I will certainly miss his "Ramblings". Our hearts and prayers go out to his family in this most difficult time. All the Best..... I met Howard when he was working at Radio Aire in 1986 as "Jay Jackson". His enthusiasm and knowledge of the industry was as inspiring as it was infectious. I'll always remember trying to get him to Leeds station and get back to the studio before the 7Up Music Machine Mix finished late on a Sunday night - in order to do my own show. My next encounter with him was when I ran PSTV & Radio Productions in 1993. He helped us drum up support for the syndication of the Dave Lee Travis Show when the Hairy Monster left Radio One. Howard was one of those great people whom you could not speak to for years, yet when you did, it's as if you'd never been apart. A great man who did a great job for a great industry. We'll miss you shag!

Met Howard on the Ross, a couple of times. I will always remember listening to him through the crackles on Radio Caroline in the 70's (especially on Christmas Day)It's amazing how such memories stay for always In The Capital Radio Music Dept, in the 80's, we all listened to Jay Jackson, blasting through on Caroline 558! Great radio to treasure. I've only lost one gig myself in radio and when that happened, Howard was possibly the most helpful and best listener. Those things you remember too. Miss you mate, thanks for the inspiration Love to your family, they should be proud Leechy x

Howard was one of the rare breed who genuinely cared about radio. Radio that reached out and touched people rather than an automated, scheduled, playlisted, strictly formatted jukebox run by people whose only real interest is financial gain. Whether you were a chief executive or someone starting out in an RSL or hospital radio station, Howard always had time to listen and was never conceited or a "know it all" - although he almost certainly did know most! I met him first back in the days of RNI in 1970 and we always caught up with each other at SBES. Through "NOW" and his "ramblings" radio owes a debt to Howard. "Cheers Mate!"
